Independance Day

On March 6th, Ghana celebrated 51 years of independance. Unfortunately, there wasn't really any big celebrations. there were no fireworks. The one event that we heard about was the marching in Independance square. Our friend Kwesi told us that all the school children get together by age or schools and they march the Independance square and wave to Ghana's president to honor him. Craig didn't think it sounded like much fun so we didn't go. Instead we went to the trade fair. The trade fair comes every couple of months. We'll probably get to go to one more before we leave. It's not like our fairs back home with animals and rides. The trade fair has vendors from Ghana and vendors from some of the surrounding countries like Nigeria and Burkina Faso who come to seel their goods. You can get everything there from beads to cloth, carved wood, paintings, etc. We bought some of our souvenirs there. I didn't take my camera because I didn't know how crowded it would be. So, next time I'll take the camera. It's basically a giant market with music playing loudly and food vendors. The one funny thing that Craig and i had a good laugh about was the entrance gate. When you enter into events there is always someone you have to pay and they are usually behind a thick glass window yadi yada yada. When you entered into the fair you walked into a narrow cement hallway. On the left the cement wall had a design all over it so that there were little holes everywhere. We walked past it and a man told us to pay. "Where?" He pointed at one of the holes that was a little bigger than the others and this hand was sticking out of it. We started laughing. You couldn't see anyone, but you could faintly hear them and this hand was just sticking out of a small hole in a cement wall. Crazy.
